Husband Falsely Blames Cyclist After Fatally Shooting His Wife

54-year-old Lori Coward was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the head.

We now have additional details following a shooting that resulted in the death of a woman.

The incident took place on Sunday night in the 6900 block of DuPont Circle in Florence County. Initially 55-year-old Marty Coward called 911 and reported that he and his wife, 54-year-old Lori, had been shot by a man on a bike wearing a hoodie and backpack.

When police arrived, Lori was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the head. Marty was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery but is ok.

Authorities began searching for the suspect and located him not far away on East Old Marion Highway. The man was searched but no weapons were found in his possession. He was charged with financial fraud, trespassing and receiving stolen goods. However, police said those charges are not related or tied to this case.

Investigators believe that Marty shot his wife before shooting himself. He has been charged with filing a false police report, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime and murder. He was denied bond and is being held at the Florence County Detention Center.
