Myrtle Beach Approves Free Downtown Parking During Off-Season

The move comes after businesses and locals argued that the year-round paid parking had a negative impact on the area.

Myrtle Beach City Council members approved the final reading of an ordinance Tuesday night.

In 2023, the city voted to implement year-round paid parking in its metered spots. However, earlier this month, the city approved the first reading of an ordinance that would bring back free parking in city-metered spots from October 1 through the end of February. This would apply to spots located from 6th Avenue South to 21st Avenue North, and west to Kings Highway.

During Tuesday night’s meeting, the council made an amendment allowing the city manager authority to temporarily suspend paid parking anywhere in the city, not just downtown, for up to 151 days per years, with notice to the council. That version was approved and will go into effect on Saturday.
