Government Officially Shuts Down For First Time In Years

President Trump and Congress failed to reach an agreement to keep government programs and services running by the deadline.

The government has officially shut down for the first time in six years.

The move came after President Trump and Congress failed to reach an agreement to keep government programs and services running by the deadline.

Around 750,000 federal workers are expected to be furloughed, some potentially fired by the Trump administration. Many offices will also be shuttered, possibly for good.

Republicans insist that Democrats must agree to extend current funding for an additional seven weeks. Democrats refuse to do so without major changes over enhanced Obamacare subsidies.

The senate will vote again Wednesday on the GOP funding plan, which Republicans vow to put on the floor daily until Democrats agree to reopen the government.
