The conservative activist was killed by a single shot in an apparent targeted attack during a Q&A event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old was a Trump ally and co-founded the conservative youth organization, Turning Point USA, which travelled to college campuses where freedom of speech was open to all for discussions and debates.
Police initially detained an alleged suspect, who was later released after questioning. A manhunt is now underway to find the suspect. The shooter wore dark clothing and fired from a roof on campus some distance away. Authorities say they tracked the shooter’s movements and believe they have recovered the rifle used to shoot Kirk. An investigation remains underway.
Many vigils are being held to honor Kirk who was a political figure to many, but first and foremost, a husband and father of two young children.
