Gov. McMaster Signs Order Regarding SNAP Benefits
The request will be sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of a proposed change.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster signed a bill into law regarding SNAP benefits.
The executive order directs the S.C. Department of Social Services to request federal approval to ban the purchase of candy, energy drinks, soft drinks, and sweetened beverages using food stamps.
The request will be sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of a proposed change to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Under the law, certain drinks will still be allowed, including milk-based beverages, 100% juice, infant formula, sports drinks, carbonated water, and beverages for medical use.
However, products like sugary treats in bar, drop, or piece form, beverages with 65mm or more of caffeine per 8oz, and others, will be excluded from the program’s benefits.
