Man Drowns While Attempting To Flee From Law Enforcement

Deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop on a stolen F-150 pickup truck along Pine Street in Pembroke.

One man is dead after attempting to elude law enforcement in Robeson County.

Just before 9am Monday, deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop on a stolen F-150 pickup truck along Pine Street in Pembroke.

The driver failed to pull over and fled at high speeds toward Highway 710. The pursuit continued until the driver veered onto Recreation Road in Maxton and drove into the Lumber River.

The man attempted to exit the truck and swim away before getting swept downstream. A multi-agency search and recovery operation was implemented.

50-year-old Gary Chavis was later recovered deceased.

In addition, a woman was recovered from the vehicle before the truck was completely submerged.

Further details are limited as an investigation is underway.
