Why the Heat Can Make Us More Irritable

Previous studies show heat waves can increase rates of emergency room visits, aggression and violence.

Summer is in full swing and so is the heat…and one health expert is sharing why the rising temperatures might make you feel more irritable.

Dr. Susan Albers, a psychologist with the Cleveland Clinic, says our bodies go into overdrive to keep us cool and that can create stress. She says it can drain your energy and impact how you think through issues. Doctor Albers says heat can also take a toll on your sleep, and the less sleep you get, the more impatient or irritable you might become. Previous studies show heat waves can increase rates of emergency room visits, aggression and violence. The doctor says it’s important to drink lots of water to avoid becoming dehydrated…because that could impact your mood as well.
