One Suspect Is Dead And Another Rescued After Jumping Off Bridge
The couple jumped off a bridge into the Santee River in an attempt to evade officers.
An incident in Georgetown County resulted in the death of one person.
On Saturday, authorities attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle after discovering its tag was listed as stolen.
The driver failed to stop and traveled west on Highmarket Street to St. Delight Road and Highway 41 toward Berkeley County leading to a pursuit.
Two people reached the Highway 41 bridge where they exited the vehicle. They jumped into the Santee River in an attempt to evade officers.
The moving vehicle then struck a sheriff’s office unit while swift currents pulled both the man and the woman under the bridge.
A passerby in a boat picked up a deputy, who rescued the woman as she was struggling to swim. The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office dive team assisted in a search for the man, whose body was later recovered. The identities of those involved have not been publicly released.
