The Democratic socialists’ victory became apparent after former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo conceded.

Mamdani’s campaign includes a rent freeze, making city buses free, affordable child-care, raising taxes on the wealthy and more.

His strong performance at the polls is expected to provide a nationwide boost to the Democratic party.

However, the race will be formally decided by ranked-choice votes and announced in July. If elected, Mamdani would be the city’s first Muslim mayor.
