Covington Drive Wildfire Officially “Controlled”

The fire in the Carolina Forest area first ignited 95 days ago and burned 2,059 acres.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission deemed the Covington Drive Wildfire officially “controlled.”

The fire in the Carolina Forest area first ignited 95 days ago and burned 2,059 acres.

A slew of emergency response organizations responded. That includes Horry County Fire Rescue, the S.C. National Guard and 56 local departments.

Each of the organizations battled the flames and worked persistently to preserve the safety of residents in Horry County.

In May, the fire was 100% contained, but crews were still on the scene to monitor conditions daily. Now, crews will no longer be needed at the site thanks to significant rainfall in the area that assisted in putting out spots that were still smoldering and threatened to spark flames.

“Controlled” means that the fire is now completely out and firefighters are confident that the fire will not escape the control lines.
