Health Officials To Phase Out Several Food Dyes

The dyes set to be phased out include Green 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1 and Blue 2.

The FDA is preparing to eliminate several food dyes by the end of next year.

Health officials plan to phase out petroleum-based artificial colors from the nation’s food supply.

The agency is expected to establish a standard and timeline for the industry to switch to natural alternatives, revoke authorization for dyes not in production within the coming weeks, and take action to remove remaining dyes on the market.

The dyes set to be phased out include Green 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1 and Blue 2.

The agency will also revoke authorization for Citrus Red 2 and Orange b, two synthetic food colorings.

In addition, the FDA said it plans to authorize four new natural color additives.
