What makes a perfect grilled cheese is totally personal, according to a new survey by Borden Cheese, conducted ahead of National Grilled Cheese Day on Saturday. Nearly half of respondents consider themselves purists, sticking to classic toasted bread and melted cheese.
For the ingredient taking center stage, 49 percent go for American cheese and 46 percent choose cheddar. Other fan favorites are mozzerella, swiss and pepperjack. More than half say two slices is the standard while roughly 1 in 5 believe three or more is the way to go. When it comes to the outside, 7 in 10 prefer a golden brown crisp to their bread while 12 percent want it somewhere between well done and burnt.
