Discussions Underway To Revitalize Former International Paper Mill Site

Plans are in discussion to revitalize the former International Paper Mill site in Georgetown County.

The mill recently closed, leaving over 700 employees without jobs and impacted hundreds of families and businesses.

Senator Stephen Goldfinch is leading the initiative and said the most promising prospect for the site is a biomass plant.

It would generate energy from tree waste, similar to the operations previously conducted at the paper mill. The power would be supplied to Santee Cooper.

Goldfinch expressed optimism and thinks having a biomass plant could be even bigger for the community than the mill was.

Nothing is set in stone and there is no timeline as to when an official decision could be made.
