Georgetown Co. Inmate Dies After Experiencing Medical Condition

A woman was detained in the detention center's detox unit after she was arrested Friday for shoplifting.

An inmate at the Georgetown County Detention Center has been pronounced dead.

The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office said a woman was detained in the detention center’s detox unit after she was arrested Friday for shoplifting.

Sunday, staff observed her experiencing a medical emergency and medical assistance was rendered before Georgetown County Emergency Medical Service arrived.

The woman was transferred to Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital where she later died.

Sheriff Carter Weaver contacted SLED and requested an investigation into the death.

The woman’s identity was not publicly released.
