Department Of Education To Cut Nearly Half Of Its Workforce

The move comes as the Trump administration is working to shrink the federal government.

The Department of Education is cutting nearly half of its workforce.

A senior department official said 1,315 staffers will be let go and were informed Tuesday. However, even before the announcement, hundreds of the 4,000 employees had already been put on leave or had taken a buyout offer.

After the reduction, there will be 2,183 employees left with the department. The move comes as the Trump administration is working to shrink the federal government.

President Trump has also repeatedly called to shutter the department all together. It was said the reduction in employees will not impact student aid, FASFA forms, or other duties the department oversees.
