Goods That Could Be Affected By New Tariffs
Tariffs imposed on goods from the two countries are expected to increase the prices of goods used by Americans every day.
The tariffs on Mexico and Canada officially took effect Tuesday.
Tariffs imposed on goods from the two countries are expected to increase the prices of goods used by Americans every day.
They could “raise consumer prices on purchases, such as food and beverage items and general merchandise, covering about a quarter of the total consumption basket, by 0.81% to 1.63%.” The tariffs are expected to cost the average American household $1,200 annually.
Canadian goods could include wood, charcoal, aluminum, cotton, iron and steel appliances and more. Items from Mexico could include cereals, paper products, processed fruits and nuts, dairy products, meats, raw sugar, baked goods and more. Gas and oil prices are expected to be affected as well.
In addition, China responded to the new tariffs by threatening to impose tariffs of up to 15% on imports of U.S. farm products. That could include chicken, pork, soy and beef, and expanded controls on doing business with key U.S. companies. That follows a 20% tariff on Chinese goods placed by Trump
