Congress Votes To Get Rid Of Methane Use Fee For Companies

Most major oil and gas companies do not release enough methane to trigger the fee of $900 per ton.

Congress has voted to repeal a federal fee on oil and gas producers who release high levels of methane.

Most major oil and gas companies do not release enough methane to trigger the fee of $900 per ton, an amount that was set to increase to $1,500 by next year.

The fee was part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act that was passed under the Biden administration. It required the companies to pay the fee based on the amount of methane they released into the atmosphere.

Thursday, the Senate voted along party lines 52-47 to repeal the fee. That came after a similar vote in the House to end the rule.

President Trump is expected to sign the resolution into law.
