IRS To Lay Off Thousands Of Probationary Workers
It is unclear how the layoffs may affect tax collection services.
The IRS announced plans to lay off nearly 7,000 workers.
The layoffs will impact probationary employees with roughly one year or less of service at the agency and largely includes workers in compliance departments.
Compliance work involves ensuring that taxpayers are abiding by the tax code, filing their returns and paying their taxes, among other duties.
The layoffs come as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to slash the size of the federal workforce through DOGE by ordering agencies to cut nearly all probationary employees who have yet to gain civil service protection.
The move also comes as this year’s tax season has already kicked off. It is unclear how the layoffs may affect tax collection services.
