Mexico Threatens To Sue Google
Mexico has argued that the mapping policy violates Mexican sovereignty.
Mexico is threatening to sue Google over a recent change to its map service.
President Claudia Sheinbaum shared a letter that says Google will not change the policy it outlined after U.S. President Trump declared the Gulf of Mexico be changed to the Gulf of America.
Google Maps recently made the name change in which the body of water appears as the Gulf of America in the United States but remains the Gulf of Mexico in Mexico. Outsider countries can see both names.
Mexico has argued that the mapping policy violates Mexican sovereignty because the U.S.
only has jurisdiction over around 46% of the gulf. The rest is controlled by Mexico with 49% and Cuba controls around 5%.
Mexican authorities said they will take legal action depending on Google’s response. They said, “Under no circumstance will mexico accept the renaming of a geographic zone within its own territory and under its jurisdiction.”
