The Laken Riley Act Cleared A Second Hurdle In The Senate
It was established after 22-year-old Laken Riley was murdered last February.
The Laken Riley Act passed through a significant hurdle in the Senate Monday.
Senators voted 82-10 on the motion to proceed to the legislation.
Clearing that second procedural hurdle allows the chamber to begin debate.
It cleared an initial hurdle last week by a 84-9 margin in the Senate.
The legislation would mandate federal detention of immigrants without legal status accused of theft, burglary and other related crimes.
It was established after 22-year-old Laken Riley was murdered last February.
The suspect was identified as Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan man who entered the U.S. illegally and has a criminal record.
It is unclear where the bill is expected to go from here.
