The House has passed legislation that would require detention of migrants arrested for theft.
The measure dubbed the ‘Laken Riley Act‘ honors the college student who was killed by a Venezuelan migrant who was arrested for shoplifting prior to the attack. He was out on parole when he brutally murdered the woman who was out for a run.
The House approved the legislation in a 264-159 vote, with 48 Democrats joining all Republicans in support. The Senate is expected to take up the measure this week.
Tuesday’s vote marks the second time that the House cleared the legislation. Republicans and some Democrats approved the bill in March, but it weakened amid opposition in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
