Canada’s Prime Minster Resigns As Leader Of The Liberal Party
This comes ahead of a general election later this year, which Trudeau was widely expected to lose.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned as leader of the ruling Liberal party Monday. He will remain prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
This comes ahead of a general election later this year, which Trudeau was widely expected to lose.
The general election must be held on or by October 20. However, Canada’s parliament will be suspended until March 24 while a new leader is chosen.
Trudeau has led the liberal party for 11 years and has been prime minister for nine.
The 53 year old is facing crises including Donald Trump’s tariff threats, the resignation of key allies, and disastrous opinion polls.
Resigning will be viewed as choosing to step down before being pushed out.
