Former President Jimmy Carter passed away Sunday.

Carter had turned 100-years-old in October, making him the longest-lived president in the nation’s history.

In February of last year, it was reported that Carter had begun receiving hospice care after a series of short hospital stays, deciding to spend the rest of his time at home with his family instead of receiving additional medical intervention.

The Democrat was 52 when he entered the oval office becoming the 39th president of the U.S. in 1977. He served a chaotic four years in the White House amid the Iran hostage crisis, oil shortages and high inflation.

Current President Biden issued a proclamation on Carter’s death Sunday, ordering American flags to be flown at half-mast for 30-days. He also marked January 9 as a National Day of Mourning to pay tribute to Carter’s service to the country and his contributions around the world after his time in the White House.
