FDA Finalizes Rule On Standards For Foods To Qualify As Healthy

The new rule marks the first major change to the standards since there were established 30 years ago.

The FDA has finalized a new rule regarding the standards foods must meet before being labeled “healthy.”

Requirements now include limits on saturated fat, sodium and added sugars.

“Healthy” foods must also contain a certain amount of food from at least one of the key food groups such as fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy.

Foods including white bread and heavily sweetened cereal and yogurt will no longer qualify as healthy.

Foods such as nuts and seeds, salmon and olive oil as well as some peanut butters, canned fruits and vegetables are among those that will now qualify as “healthy.”

The new rule marks the first major change to the standards since there were established 30 years ago.
