NHTSA Finalizes New Rule Regarding Seat Belt Warning Systems

Over the next two years, the "ding" of the seat belt reminder will be required for rear and passenger seats, not just drivers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finalized a new rule.

Over the next two years, the “ding” of the seat belt reminder will be required for rear and passenger seats, not just drivers.

The new rule will also require enhanced warnings for driver seats.

Front seat belt warning system requirements will go into effect by September 1 of 2026. Meanwhile, rear seat belt warning systems must comply by September 1 of 2027.

Vehicle manufactures are encouraged to comply with the new rule ahead of the deadline dates.

The rule aims to prevent vehicle-related injuries and deaths.
