Google Says Its New Quantum Chip Is Faster Than Most Powerful Computer
Overcoming that challenge, the new chip can solve a computing problem in five minutes, which would take a classical computer years to solve.
Google said its new quantum chip is faster than the world’s most powerful supercomputer.
The latest chip dubbed ‘Willow’ has reportedly demonstrated “two major achievements” in quantum computing.
That includes “exponentially” reducing the rate of errors when adding more qubits. That has been a difficult challenge to conquer for nearly 30-years.
Qubits are the units of computation in quantum computers, and are typically electrons, photons, or another subatomic particle.
The more qubits that are used, the more errors typically occur making the system more classical than quantum.
Overcoming that challenge, the new chip can solve a computing problem in five minutes, which would take a classical computer years to solve.
Willow’s accomplishments demonstrate that it’s possible to build a “useful, large-scale quantum computer.”
