Franklin Fire Rapidly Spreads Toward Malibu In Southern California

A fire near downtown Malibu in Southern California is rapidly spreading.
The flames have prompted mandatory evacuations and is threatening homes and businesses, including the city’s iconic Malibu Pier.
Students and faculty at Pepperdine University have been ordered to shelter in place.
The Franklin Fire has been burning through an area larger than five football fields every minute since the flames broke out Monday night.
The fire is so intense that it’s impacting the weather around it and worsening already extreme conditions.
It’s reportedly so hot that it is changing local winds, bringing them into the fire. Wind gusts are in the 40 mph range while humidity levels are critically low.
More than 57,000 customers in California are currently without power due to the fire.
The city of Malibu announced it has activated its emergency operations centers.
