McColl Mayor George Garner Killed In Crash

It was said Garner was not being chased by police for committing a crime, but for protection of his well-being.

Residents of the McColl community have experienced a loss after their mayor passed away Tuesday.

George Garner was killed in a crash that occurred shortly before 3pm along Highway 34 near South Charleston Road.

A deputy from Marlboro County was pursuing his 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe when the vehicle veered over the center line and struck a Volvo Tractor-Trailer.

Garner was taken to a hospital where he later died. The truck driver was also injured, but their current condition is unknown.

It was said Garner was not being chased by police for committing a crime, but for protection of his well-being.

However, Garner was reportedly connected to an active SLED investigation.
