Major Airlines Halt Flights To And From Haiti After Plans Struck By Gunfire

A flight attendant suffered minor injuries, but no other people appeared to be harmed.

Multiple commercial airlines have suspended flights to Haiti after an incident.

Monday, a Spirit Airlines flight took off from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and was just hundreds of feet from landing in the capital Port-au-Prince when the plane was struck by gunfire.

A flight attendant suffered minor injuries, but no other people appeared to be harmed. The flight was diverted and landed in the Dominican Republic.

In a separate incident, JetBlue reported it’s Flight 935 from Haiti to New York Monday was also struck by gunfire. It landed in the U.S. without any issues. However, a post-flight inspection revealed the aircraft’s exterior had been struck by a bullet.

The disruptions prompted JetBlue, Spirit, and American Airlines to cancel all flights to and from Haiti.

Spirit suspension is pending further evaluation, American’s will last until at least thursday while JetBlue has halted all flights through December 2.

The incidents come after a new prime minister took office causing growing chaos including armed gangs and escalating violence.
