Millions Without Power After Major Cuba Blackout
The nation's energy grid failed after one of the island's major power plants went down.
A major blackout in Cuba left millions in the dark for two days.
On Thursday, the nation’s energy grid failed after one of the island’s major power plants went down. Half of Cuba lost power before the entire island on Friday.
The Antonia Guiteras Thermoelectric plant is located in Matanzas province east of Havana. The grid collapsed three times since the first outage leaving around 10 million people in the dark.
The repeated failures mark a major setback in the Cuban government’s efforts to quickly restore power to residents who have experienced blackouts through the summer.
Officials have been working since last year on a project to upgrade the island’s electrical grid through the use of alternative power sources. A project to build 31 centers generating solar energy is currently in the works and expected to be completed next year.
