U.S. Invokes Wartime Powers Amid Nationwide IV Shortage

In addition, the FDA has approved Baxter to import IV fluids from its other plants around the world.

Hospitals across the nation are still experiencing an IV shortage prompting the U.S. to make a decision.

The Biden administration has invoked the wartime powers of the Defense Production Act to assist in the rapid rebuilding of a major American factory of IV fluids that was destroyed by Hurricane Helene.

Around 60% of the nation’s IV supplies relied on production from the Baxter plant in North Carolina. The damage to the facility prompted hospitals to ration their supplies resulting in the postponing of surgeries and other procedures.

The move puts Baxter at the front of the line for a contractor needed for construction in the plant. Invoking the powers could help accelerate rebuilding or help other domestic manufacturers step up.

In addition, the FDA has approved Baxter to import IV fluids from its other plants around the world.

The last time the Defense Production Act was used was during the COVID-19 pandemic.
