23AndMe Agrees To $30 Million Settlement In Class Action Lawsuit

The lawsuit was filed in January accusing the company of failing to protect users' personal information.

Ancestry and genetics-testing company 23AndMe has agreed to pay a $30 million settlement in a class action lawsuit.

The settlement comes after the company confirmed that “threat actors” used around 14,000 accounts to access the ancestry data of 6.9 million connected profiles.

Leaked data included users’ account information, location, DNA matches, family names, profile pictures, birth dates and more.

23AndMe confirmed the breach in October but did not reveal the full extent of the issue until December.

The lawsuit was filed in January accusing the company of failing to protect users’ personal information. It also accused 23AndMe of neglecting to notify certain users that were involved.

The company admitted no wrongdoing but has agreed to pay the $30 million to affected parties.
