32-year-old Joseph Couch opened fire off of a cliff ledge at travelers heading down Interstate-75 in Laurel County on Saturday.

It was revealed that Couch sent a text message vowing to “kill a lot of people” less than 30 minutes before he shot and wounded five people and struck a dozen vehicles with bullets. In a separate message, Couch wrote, “i’ll kill myself after.”

The messages were reportedly sent to his ex-wife who called in the messages to a dispatcher. A tracker was put on couch’s phone in response but the location wasn’t received until after the shooting.

Authorities have been searching for Couch since the incident occurred. He is wanted on five counts of criminal attempt to commit murder and first-degree assault.

It was said there is no reason to believe he fled the area which is mostly dense and deeply wooded.
