Grand Canyon Flooding Leaves One Hiker Dead And Prompted Evacuations
Arizona's National Guard had to use a helicopter to evacuate over 100 tourists and tribal members
Flash flooding in the Grand Canyon National Park has prompted rescues and resulted in at least one death.
Search and rescue operations began Thursday, when flash flooding swept hiker Chenoa Nickerson into the park’s Havasu Creek. The 33-year-old’s body was discovered Sunday near mile 176 of the Colorado River.
Hazardous flooding also led Arizona’s National Guard to use a helicopter to evacuate over 100 tourists and tribal members from a canyon on the lands of the Havasupai Tribe within the park.
The flooding was triggered by monsoon storms. No other deaths have been reported at this time.
