The president of Columbia University has stepped down effective immediately.
Dr. Minouche Shafik’s announcement comes months after she was criticized for her handling of anti-Semitism on campus and protests in response to the war between Israel and Hamas. She said it has been an honor and privilege to lead the institution, but it has also been difficult to overcome divergent views across the community.
Shafik added it has taken a significant toll on her family and others and she decided moving on at this point would be best. She became the president of the school at the beginning of the 2023-2024 academic year and was the first woman to hold the position.
Katrina Armstrong has been named the interim president for now.
