Over 300 deaths suspected to be a result of this summer’s record-breaking heat wave are being investigated in Arizona.
With 4.4 million people in Phoenix, 322 deaths are suspected to have been due to heat-related illnesses. Nearly 100 of those deaths occurred in one single week from July 7-13. During that time, temperatures reached 118-degrees.
There have been 23 officially confirmed deaths in the county related to heat this year, 17 of which were directly caused by heat and the other six were heat-contributed.
Across the entire U.S., there have been at least 73-officially confirmed heat-related deaths this year. That compares to 12 confirmed heat-related deaths and 106 under investigation at this time last year.
