One woman has died after being attacked by a dog in a Florence community.

Wednesday evening, police were called to the area of Brigadoone Lane in reference to a woman with severe injuries.

Upon arrival, officials were informed the 71-year-old Karen Nelson was riding a bicycle through the area when a dog got loose and attacked her as well as knocked her off the bike.

Nelson was bitten multiple times and was transported to a hospital for treatment where she later died.

Animal control authorities took possession of the dog. It’s owners gave up ownership, therefore it is the city’s property for now. A judge will be appointed to decide what action to take next.

If the dog is considered dangerous, it could be put down or the judge could also allow adoption with restriction. A decision is expected to be made on Friday.

No charges have been announced against the dog’s previous owners. An investigation is still underway.
