Coastal Carolina University To Get Pedestrian Walkway Across Hwy 544

There were incidents in 2012 and 2016 in which two students were hit and killed by cars along the highway.

Coastal Carolina University is getting a new amenity aimed at keeping students safe.

The school is ramping up to install a pedestrian walkway across Highway 544. It’s one of the busiest roadways in Horry County. It is also an obstacle that many CCU students cross every day.

There were incidents in 2012 and 2016 in which two students were hit and killed by cars along the highway.

The 2016 death launched talks about adding a walkway, which has been a plan for years. With $10 million to help financially back the project, it is now officially in the works.

There are several things that need to be finalized before construction can begin, but it has been approved at various levels.
