UN Security Council Approves Its First Resolution Supporting A Ceasefire In Gaza
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been hesitant with accepting the deal, saying that his country is still committed to destroying Hamas.
The UN Security Council approved its first resolution supporting a ceasefire plan aimed at ending the war between Israel and Hamas.
The U.S. sponsored resolution welcomes a proposal announced by President Biden. It calls on Hamas and Israel to accept a three-phase plan to end the war and release hostages.
The resolution invites the rivals “to fully implement it’s terms without delay and without condition.” It was approved by 14 Security Council members voting in favor with Russia abstaining.
The resolution’s strong support in the UN’s powerful body puts pressure on both parties to approve the proposal.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been hesitant with accepting the deal, saying that his country is still committed to destroying Hamas. The Palestinian militant group has welcomed the adoption of the resolution and said it is ready to work with mediators to implement it.
