Florence Authorities Warn Of New Scam Approach

The sheriff's office confirmed this is a scam and said authorities would never demand money to avoid arrest.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a new scam approach.

Usually, scammers call over the phone falsely claiming to be law enforcement. They threaten to serve an arrest warrant for failure to appear for jury duty. Recipients are then given the option to pay a fine or face arrest.

However, scammers in Florence are now sending emails with arrest warrants that are meant to look official.

The fake documents demand the recipient pay the amount listed or they will be arrested.

The document states the recipient is not allowed to discuss the warrant with anyone, including law enforcement. It further added that the fine or “bonding amount” can be paid on a mobile app with a debit card or Apple pay.

The sheriff’s office confirmed this is a scam and said authorities would never demand money to avoid arrest. Officials added that if an actual warrant is out for your arrest, you will not be contacted by phone or email.
