Slovakia’s Prime Minister In Stable But Serious Condition After Being Shot

It has been determined that the suspect was a lone wolf who "did not belong to any political group."

One suspect has been charged in connection to the attempted assassination of Slovakia’s prime minister.

Robert Fico was attacked Wednesday after an off-site government meeting in the town of Handlova. He approached a small crowd of people waiting to meet him, when the suspected gunman lunged forward and shot him.

The 59-year-old leader is reportedly in stable but serious condition after being shot five times at close range and undergoing surgery.

An initial investigation found “clear political motivation” behind the attack. However, it has been determined that the suspect was a lone wolf who “did not belong to any political group.”

The attempt on Fico’s life came at a time of high division in Slovakia, as thousands of demonstrators have repeatedly rallied in the capital and around the country to protest his policies.
