Man Accused Of Killing Police Officer And Paramedic Pleads Not Guilty

Jaremy Smith will remain in custody until his trial begins. If convicted of the current charges, smith faces a mandatory life sentence or the death penalty.

A man accused of two murders pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in federal court Thursday.

33-year-old Jaremy Smith, of Marion, allegedly shot and killed New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare.

Smith is facing charges including possession of a stolen firearm, causing death by the discharge of a firearm and in relation to a crime of violence, along with several others.

Smith is also facing 17 charges in the death of Phonesia Machado-Fore, who was a Pee Dee paramedic. He allegedly kidnapped her and shot her in the back of the head. He then stole her car which is what he was allegedly traveling in when he shot Hare.

Smith will remain in custody until his trial begins. If convicted of the current charges, smith faces a mandatory life sentence or the death penalty.
