North Myrtle Beach, known as the birthplace of The Shag, announces a year of celebrations and a Shag Trail to commemorate the 40th anniversary of The Shag’s designation as the state dance of South Carolina. Destination North Myrtle Beach will host a press conference with key figures throughout the destination, state and shag community to commemorate The Shag anniversary as well as announce a special proclamation issued by Mayor Hatley and read by Mayor Pro Tempore J.O. Baldwin and a shag demonstration by acclaimed local dancers. The press conference will be moderated by beloved shag enthusiast, musician and entertainer, Jim Quick with a celebratory performance by the Band of Oz. Attendees may stop by the Destination North Myrtle Beach Shag tent to take a free signature anniversary logo pin (for the first 1,000 attendees) and purchase commemorative anniversary tee shirts. Participants are encouraged to walk out to the beach to see and photograph the special sand sculpture of the anniversary shag medallion and North Myrtle Beach logos. This event is free and open to the public.
