Arizona Supreme Court Rules State Must Abide By Century-Old Abortion Law
Enforcement of the law has been delayed for 14 days as it could face legal challenges, including whether it is constitutional.
The Arizona Supreme Court ruled Tuesday the state must abide by an abortion law dating back to 1864.
The law was codified in 1901 and bans nearly all abortions. It also carries a prison sentence of two to five years and fines for abortion providers.
The legislation comes with exceptions when the action is necessary to save a woman’s life. However, it does not make exceptions for rape or incest.
The state court’s 4-2 decision puts Arizona among those with the strictest abortion laws in the country.
Enforcement of the law has been delayed for 14 days as it could face legal challenges, including whether it is constitutional.
