The Surfside Beach police chief announced his resignation.

Kenneth Hofmann will step down from the position and in a letter blamed “rumors that are being used to attack me and my administration of the police department.”

Hofmann also blamed “certain” members of the town council and town officials for the “mishandling” of the rumors. He added that the mishandling “tarnished” his professional reputation.

Hoffman has worked with the town since 2007, his final day as police chief will be May 3.
