AT&T Data Breach Affects Millions Of Current And Former Customers

The telecommunications giant said that a data-set found on the "dark web" contains information including some social security numbers and passcodes.

AT&T announced a data breach occurred involving the theft of sensitive information belonging to millions of current and former customers.

The telecommunications giant said that a data-set found on the “dark web” contains information including some social security numbers and passcodes. Full names, email addresses, mailing addresses and more may have also been compromised. The information belonged to nearly 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million former account holders.

It’s unclear whether the data originated from AT&T or one of its vendors at this time.

Consumers impacted by the breach should be receiving an email or letter directly from AT&T regarding the incident.

Beyond these notifications, AT&T said that it had already reset current users’ passcodes. The company added that it would pay for credit monitoring services where applicable.

An investigation with internal and external cybersecurity experts has been opened.
