The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday morning.
Around 1:30am, a large container ship struck a column of the bridge, sending vehicles and people into the Patapsco River.
Officials said at least two people have been rescued from the water, one was in “very serious condition” while the other was not injured.
Rescue workers are searching for as many as six additional people and the number of missing people could change.
Iit was said a scanner located a lot of diesel fuel in the water surrounding the ship but it is unclear just how much.
The collapse is being described as “a mass casualty event.”
The U.S. Coast Guard is assisting in the search and rescue efforts.
Further details remain limited as crews work.
The initial cause of the collision is unclear at this time.
