First Successful American Mission To Land On Moon’s Surface Since 1972
As it approached the moon, Odie lost contact with NASA, but after 15 minutes of searching, officials confirmed they were once again receiving signals from the spacecraft and it successfully landed on the moon.
An unmanned, robotic lunar lander touched down on the moon’s surface Thursday.
Odysseus was launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida last week on-board a SpaceX Falcon rocket.
On Wednesday, the 14-foot-tall spacecraft had been pulled by the moon’s gravity into a circular orbit.
Thursday, ‘Odie’ dropped within 6 miles of the lunar surface. As it approached the moon, Odie lost contact with NASA, but after 15 minutes of searching, officials confirmed they were once again receiving signals from the spacecraft and it successfully landed on the moon.
Odie has now become the first American mission to land on the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.
