Thanks to TikTok…The 1847 Oregon Trail Sourdough Preservation Society is Blowing Up

You can grow it and share it yourself as well, all you have to do is follow the instructions on their website

Bread makers know you can’t make sourdough without a starter. One organization sends out free starters from a colony that supposedly dates back to 1847. Thanks to a TikTok video that has gone viral, workers there are getting overwhelmed.

Mary Buckingham is the mailbox keeper for The 1847 Oregon Trail Sourdough Preservation Society. She picks up requests and process the envelopes to be filled with about a teaspoon of ground dried sourdough starter. She says the requests suddenly fell upon them when a TikTok video went viral on January 20th. Last week they had over 1,300. Sending free starters is nothing new for the organization. Founder, Carl Griffith, started doing it in the 90s. You can grow it and share it yourself as well, all you have to do is follow the instructions on their website.
