U.S. Senators Reveal Bipartisan Border Security Bill

President Biden urged Congress to pass the agreement while House Speaker Mike Johnson declared it "dead on arrival."

After months of negotiating, a group of U.S. Senators revealed a bipartisan border security bill Sunday.

The $188 billion proposal would provide aid to Ukraine and Israel and could bring the biggest changes to the country’s immigration policy in decades.

The bill includes having Homeland Security officials temporarily “shut down” the border if too many migrants cross over a sustained period of time. It would also end the practice of “catch and release,” by speeding up the handling of asylum cases.

In addition, the bill pledges $60 billion in aid for Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel, and nearly $5 billion for U.S. allies facing aggression from China, such as Taiwan. Another $10 billion would go to aid for civilians in conflict zones.

President Biden urged Congress to pass the agreement while House Speaker Mike Johnson declared it “dead on arrival.”

Despite the opposition, Senate lawmakers vowed to push ahead.
